Why training is usually the first thing to go
Moving to Amsterdam reorganises everything. The gym contract is in Dutch, the group classes are in Dutch, the paperwork takes longer than anyone told you, and the two months it takes to feel settled become two months of not training.
Fit by David coaches entirely in English, in private gyms in the centre. Most of our clients arrived here from somewhere else. You are not the exception in the room.
English is the easy part
Coaching in English is table stakes. What actually helps is everything around it: that your kitchen is smaller than the one you left, that Albert Heijn doesn't stock what your old supermarket did, that "just cycle everywhere" has quietly changed what your hip flexors and lower back are doing, and that your first year of social life runs on borrels.
The programming accounts for that, and so does the nutrition guidance, built around what you can actually buy and cook here, not a plan written for a different country's supermarket.
Built for people who don't know how long they're staying
Expat contracts are unpredictable, so ours aren't rigid:
- 12-week program - the structured route, in three phases: foundation, intensification, peak. From €75 per session 1-on-1. See 1-on-1 personal training
- Monthly membership - 4, 8, 12 or 16 sessions a month, adjusted as your schedule shifts.
- Single sessions - for the months when nothing is settled yet.
- Duo training - bring a partner or colleague, from €41 each. See duo personal training
If you relocate, you stop. No exit fee and no twelve-month tail.
The room matters more than you'd expect
Sessions take place in the private gyms of five-star hotels in the centre, closed to the public and rarely more than a few people in the room. Several clients have said they used to find gyms intimidating and stopped noticing it here. If you're new to training, or returning after a long gap, that turns out to matter more than the equipment does.
Meeting people
Training solves the fitness problem. It doesn't automatically solve the harder one. A few formats help with both:
- Small group training - three to six people, each on their own program, same hour. See small group training
- Private running tour - 07:00, a coach who knows the routes, the city before it wakes up. See the running tour
- Ice bath and breathwork - 75 minutes, and a conversation afterwards. See wellness experiences
Recovery
Sports, deep tissue and relaxation massage in the same buildings, 60 minutes for €120. Useful in the first months, when cycling, carrying boxes and a new desk chair all arrive at once. See massage treatments.
